PlayStation Vita Will Die A “Horrible Premature Death” According To UK Studio

Henrique Olifiers, the head of UK game development house Bossa Studios has told Video Gamer that he believes that the PlayStation Vita will suffer a horrible premature death when it comes to the West in February.

“We’ll keep on the lookout to see what the next gen will bring, but if they want more focus on tech specs rather than usability and accessibility, I don’t think it will be for us,” he stated.

Pointing to the Vita, PS3 and Xbox 360 as examples, he went on to say: “I hate the fact you cannot play a game on the PS3 against the same game on the 360 or PC. Walled gardens in a world where people are freely connected all the time is just a dumb idea that limits what is achievable.

“Valve is bang on: proprietary stuff is madness, we should be moving to more open platforms, to interoperability, bringing everyone together. If this is not the motto for the big console manufacturers, not only will we not be there – they’re likely to die a horrible premature death, the kind of which I think the Vita will suffer from.”

  1. He makes good points, but it’s stupid to rule out the vita so early on. Especially since signs seem that playstation has learned their lesson……well…..if only they lowered their memory card prices. -__-

    • Lol yea the memory cards are what’s killing my desire to get one. You’ll spend about $440 if you want the wifi only vita, a game, and 32gb memory card. It’s makes more sense to buy a 32gb card because 8 4gb memory cards will cost you double to price one 32gb. Also that doesn’t include a case for the vita. I want one but I don’t have that kind of money

  2. “Valve is bang on: proprietary stuff is madness”

If Valve let other online stores sell their games, it’d be easier to believe they do support this idea in earnest. Or better: if it let me install the games I’ve bought from them in an offline notebook anytime.

Everyone’s in favour of “openness” and less “walled gardens” (wtf does that even mean?) when it’s about *the others’* proprietary stuff, not theirs. I’d love to see consoles connecting to each other, but I’m not surprised they aren’t. And this separation has its perks – it builds competition to build the better network.

Everyone seems to think we’d have a perfect online gaming network if the console manufacturers wanted it to happen, but the more likely scenario would be either a second PSN with subscription fees, or a new Xbox Live network falling under its own weight – and eventually raising prices.

  3. “I hate the fact you cannot play a game on the PS3 against the same game on the 360 or PC. [...] If [manufacturers don't do this] they’re likely to die a horrible premature death, the kind of which I think the Vita will suffer from.” You know, the PS Vita does actually have the ability to play its multiplayer games again PS3 versions of that same game, using the “Cross-Play” feature (in games that support the feature, like Wipeout for example). Just saying. It might not be TOTAL interoperability, but it is PSN interoperability, and that’s still pretty freaking cool.

  4. The Vita will do well! It may have a rough start at first like 3DS, but it will soar just like the 3DS within the year. Im hopeful of that.

  5. Well after Nintendo lowered the 3DS price, that kinda puts the Vita in a tough spot

People are gonna go after the things that cost less.

  6. I’m not planning on buying one, but this is a little out there. As long as the games don’t become what they were on the PSP, it’ll do great

  7. maan I think the title of this topic is totally wrong. It was just past of his comment, but I totally agree. It’s time for a renovation on these network systems. It’s not really that hard, since we can play WoW or Ragnarok in macs, windows and linux, all together, so it’s really possible. But I guess some of the competition would drop, and costs would rise, [or not? O__o] . I think we gotta give PSVita a chance, since it’s up to the game developers to do a well job, couse the console and power is there. [BTW I would've loved to play CoD MW3 with my wii agains't my brother in his PS3 all the way to the US, it would have been awesome! Q__Q]

  8. who on earth would want to play against people with pcs, its just full of hackers and modders that ruin the game for everyone else.
